Why does the need to pee intensify by a million when you are trying to unlock the door to your house?
We have all waited behind the door to scare someone, then leaving because they’re taking too long to come. We have all tried to remember someone’s name a minute after a conversation with them. So before I forget this one, the featured image above (The Art) is the work of Faith. Not the kind of faith you have when you believe something too much, but Faith, a human being. Faith, the student from Jkuat. The one who told me that she is studying something to do with Physiotherapy.
“That sounds more like science and medical course!” I thought out loudly.
“Yes it is. Physiotherapy helps restore movement and function when someone is affected by injury, illness or disability.”
“But do you guys also learn to draw?”
“Haha Mbai. I just draw for fun you know. Like you Mbai, what do you do for fun?”
We can be honest about many things but lets draw a line on one thing. That we don’t discuss the things I do for fun. Not that am scared. I just don’t want to fantasize passionately about the topics that matter to me only to have you laughing endlessly on the other end. Like how I love sleeping for instance and yes, how food is bae. Besides my bed, I love keeping my stomach happy. I have faith that maybe, one day I will grow big. At times wonder if I eat to grow or simply eat because the food is sweet.
I still eat that paper that holds a pancake (I wonder which school taught me that) and for some reason, the smokies, the samosas and the eggs sold near the stage and aaah, the mutura tempation is constantly catching my attention. Don’t forget, white coffee and I are inseparable. We are locked together.
We are locked together like Kenya and Corruption. Locked together like a fool and his stupid ideas. I still do not know if we will live together long enough to tell our attachment story to future generations, but I know I am not the only one making such a decision. At least, Faith has as well. Doesn’t darkness feel better when you are two or more?
Before Faith drew the art above (feel free to scroll and check it out again), she indicated that it had been long before she put pen to paper. There is a whole funny story of how we of cause met at Bomb Blast Memorial Park in Nairobi, how we openly unlocked stories of our inner selves to each other and how I would one day pay her a visit in school expecting to find the doctor like equipment in her house only to land on pieces of art on her wall. Hand drawn art. Like the one below.
I do not have an eye for good art but what Faith had on her wall was absolute beauty. I loved it regardless of how much she insisted that it was just a sketch.
“This are just sketches I drew when I was bored.” she said.
“It’s really beautiful you know. It’s a gift you have.” I told her
“Like I said. I just draw for fun.”
“This is the kind of fun that can take you places.”
“Haha, ati places?” she asked laughing.
“Yes. This can make you forget that Physio-whatever you said you are studying.” I pointed out.
“Okay! Places like where?”
I didn’t know how exactly to respond to that question. I still don’t. So I gave her an assignment. To draw an unlocked padlock. While most of you would try to attach the financial aspect of it, I see something different. I don’t know what it is but it is different. The richest people in the world look for and build networks, everyone else looks for work.
Today, I got an email from Faith. “Hi, attached is your padlock. Unlocked like you wanted it.”
I smiled. Then I laughed. Then I admired the unlocked padlock again. She did it. She unlocked herself. She said she hasn’t drawn for a while but with this padlock, I think she has unlocked her drawing self.
Sometimes in life, you find a special friend. Someone who changes your life just by being part of it. Someone who makes you feel unlocked. Someone who makes you laugh until you can’t stop. Someone who makes you believe that there really is good in the world. Makes you believe that you did well even when you think you failed. Someone who convinces you that there really is an unlocked door just waiting for you to open it.
Faith needs to draw some more so that her unlocked padlock is not locked again. She claims her work isn’t good enough yet. Please tell her your honest opinion in the comments below. In the meantime, does anyone know how to I can have my coffee attachment unlocked?
